Looking for GPU compatible distro/driver

Hi, so I just setup my ubuntu 20.04 installation in safe mode with graphics nomodeset in grub. I have tried both ppa and amdgpu-pro drivers for my r9 280 (2015) with no luck - all booting to a void black screen.

I understand v14, to be supported, but that is rather dated and unsupported too. Any distro/drivers that would work, particularly interested in Manjaro if anyone knows the driver support landscape there - although I would be content with anything at this point!

Amdgpu-experimental from arch/Manjaro may just work for me. It will be my next attempt if I can't find anything more conclusive.
