light glowing around Desktop Text in Menus, Window title font, application font, etc.
Desktop Text in Menus, Window title font, application font, and panel, etc. [Garuda Bold 16] has light halo glow around it -:- how to remove the halo glow? Looks like a white glow around every character. Disturbs my vision!
System: Gigabyte A55MDS2=A4-3400=8Gb ddr3 1333mhz=1Tb Seagate =Samsung T24C55OND T.V. as monitor. Viewing distance 32”...
Is this due to LCD light leaks or the way fonts are programmed or just the nature of LED LCD T.V. monitors? Also text in word processor has jagged edges. Something I've rarely seen in my 13 year old LCD monitor. I'll bet it'd something programmed in to highlight the text agains a lighter than dark background.
Preferences/ Appearance preferences/ fonts/ rendering : does very little to change it; best contrast and best shape seem to be the best choice for readability but halo is still there and it makes it hard for me to focus and read.
Changing Themes helps the readability some but still a irritating Halo around Characters.
When I mouse over the words in menus and a sub menu appears, the word that I moused over gets a darker background and halo disappears during the mouseover.
I have used MATE and I haven't run into this, but I haven't used MATE in a while. I mostly use E17 on my MATE computer. (Frankly, my first guess would have been that you were using KDE, as the issue you describe sounds like KDE's Plasma effects.)
For testing purposes, you might try installing a different desktop environment and seeing whether the issues exist under it or are restricted to MATE.
As for including details in your profile, it's a good idea to put relevant details in a post, as many persons here run multiple distributions (I'm running Slackware, Mint, and Mageia right now), so readers are not likely to assume that your profile necessarily relates to your question.

Thanx FrankBell
I basically have only two network worthy computers which are almost idential harware wise and each is running Mint 17 Mate excepting for a few BSD installs on VBox.
1-Gigabyte A55MDS2=A4-3400=8GBddr3-1333mhz=1TBSeagate
2-Biostar TA75M=A4-3300=8GBddr3-1333mhz=1TBSeagate
I see some people respond at the end of notice with their rig info. I was wanting to do the same with the above two configurations.

There is a plasma program installed [plasmascriptengine-java 4.3.13.3Ubuntu....] and two libraries but have no clue why they are there.
I've posted for help with how to get another Desktop installed, seems there is just something in the area for choosing a desktop that said something about a script. Well I forgot where I was going with this last line sorry!

I got LXDE installed and ran it and it's programs. Seems to have the same light glow around charachters but not as pronounced. Will try yo toy with other Dtops and see. Hard using something not familiar with and comparing them.

Sorry, I sometimes forget the basics, so I assume you might, too. So, did you play with the monitor's inbuilt contrast and brightness? I get the effects you described when brightness is to high (and that needn't be at 100%...).

Yep right off the bat and it does change the intensity of the glow but not remove it. If i get it to a comfortable setting for glow then Text and background do not have enough contrast to be able to read with ease.
What I'm thinking is that whomever designed and built the Theme used black for text on a grey or light colored back ground and may have added an outline function to the text and characters to enhance visibility. As for me tho it detracts from visibility.
One other thought is that I was using Florescent LCD and wasn't so noticible there but LED LCD amplified it.
Anyone got any ideas why some of these posts are ending up in my junk and trash folders?

Your post caused me to double check T.V. Monitor settings [too many settings too little time] and I found one I'd never seen before called Mode. It was set at 10 and seemed to lighten things if it was lowered and this lightening seemed to diminish the outline glow when set below 5. 3 or 4 setting was perfect but them monito screen was brighter. Will have to play with it some more to see if dimming the monitor will bring back the outline glow.

BEFORE[back light=20, contrast=88,brightness=33, sharpness=100]
Mode settings: NOW[back light=12, contrast=100,brightness=24, sharpness=100] made the outline glow more liveable. It's still there especially in Browser window and panel. Menus seem pretty close to normal as in almost no glow. I still believe it was designed that way sure would be nice to see and remove completely. Are all LEDS fussy I tried and AOC and it was a nightnare?
I have experienced what you are describing when using HDMI. The solution for me was to switch to VGA. The problem seems to have something to do with the video adapter and HDMI output. I have never seen the issue with VGA or DV-I.

My display only has HDMI, VGA, and RCA being a cheap 1920x1080 T.V. and all, but me using VGA. Could an older 13yo vga cable cause some of this? Same cable in use with 13 year old Princeton Graphics 17" LCD. Not sure if LED requires a different cable than LCD flourescent.
I could find my DVI to HDMI cable but why.... Prior to this I was using my 50"'Plasma but both HDMI ports stopped working on the t.v. at 2+years old. I'm not a fan of HDMI. Expensive to replace ports.
Anyway 50" way too big for monitor unless across the room!
