What happens if you double click?
If you right click on the file you can choose which player you want to use
Other players
xine, gxine, mplayer ....

VLC should work though
Any error messages?

What happens if you open VLC, and then open the file?
Do you have al the codecs installed ?

vlc player is working ,but i have to right click and select run with vlc player.

If i double click it opens Movie player ,i think it comes default with ubuntu 9.0.Then it says

"

The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that supports the selected file?

The search will also include software which is not officially supported.
