HOWTO remove 'wine' package that is "not installed"

When I open Applications from my top tray, I find the following:
Applications --> Wine --> Programs --> {short list}

When I use apt-get in a shell, I get:
Code:
prompt$ sudo apt-get purge wine
[sudo] password:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package wine is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
prompt$
So part of my workstation thinks that 'wine' is around and another part thinks that it is not installed.

How do I remove whatever there is that is confusing things?

Merci d'avance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
Have you checked to see if any Wine-related files/directories still exist in the filesystem (e.g. your ~/.wine directory)? You might try removing those manually. Also, (and I'm assuming you're on GNOME 2.x) you might try right-clicking your Applications menu and going into the menu editor to remove the Wine entry.
Your menu system doesn't think that wine is installed. It thinks that still some Windows programs are installed. Have a look at ~/.local/share/applications and delete the entries corresponding to those programs and wine.
Thumbs up
I had the same problem (I had installed and uninstalled Wine, but still had it in the menu), and this worked for me in Linud Mint 17:
  1. Go into the mint menu -> Wine
  2. Right-click on Notepad
  3. Choose "Uninstall"
After that the Wine submenu disappeared.
