How to Create an ISO from my Mint 20 installation?

New to Linux. I did search the forums but was unable to find any information on how I can create an .iso of my current Mint 20 installation.

I need to be able to perform a disaster recovery scenario.

In the past, I believe I used Remastersys; However, when I tried to find that program, it was not on any repository. Any other proven method would also work.

Another option I'm open to would be to use a backup tool that I could recover my system with in the event of say, a cyber attack?

If someone is going to suggest backing up a partition, I would also need to know how to get grub to work again, if that were to be a problem. I'll test the solution by backing up the system, then reinstalling it on another computer.

Thanks all,

fusionstate.

Lots of options, but clonezilla should fit the bill easiest.

Clonezilla

Well, I did a couple things. First, I went to Sourceforge and downloaded both the zip file and the .iso to the hard drive. I'll make a bootable version later.

Then, I used Software Manager to install Clonezilla on the system. However, when I use the menu system, lower left lm icon, and search for Clonezilla to run it and look through the menus, it is not listed. It does show up in Software Manager as installed.

I'm going to try to run it from the terminal. That worked. It brought up some menus I'll look through.

Thanks syg00.

No, to get a valid image you'll need to shutdown the system first. Burn the iso to a usb and boot that. Then create your image.

Work in Progress

I'm about to watch several videos on how to use Clonezilla. I plan on loading the Live, version of Clonezilla onto a USB drive partition. From that point, presumably, one boots the USB drive, and runs the Live version to back up the existing operating system drives.

For now, as I mentioned, I'll watch several videos on youtube.

I do have backups; And I'll let you know how it all turns out,

fusionstate.

Create .iso

Is there a way to create an .iso distro, that may be installed on another machine, from my current desktop installation of Linux?

Yes. That's it.

This is what I've been looking for. I will however, use Clonezilla to back up my system.

Thank you all,

fusionstate.

Remastersys was excellent software but hasn't been in development for years. It was a one man project and as things changed it became more difficult for the developer to keep up so he dropped it. Systemback is similar software and is also Ubuntu specific. I haven't used it recently so am not sure it is in development. The software at the link in post 7 looks like it will do the job.

As I recall, remastersys had this as an option. If you create an iso of your installed system and want to use it to install on other computers, you will likely need to install the systems (Mint) installer before creating the iso.

You can also use Timeshift to create a system snapshot, which is included in Linux Mint if I am not mistaken.
