How do I make a virtual desktop larger than actual size?

I just got an Asus eeepc which has a very _very_ small screen. Max resolution is 800x480 (yes, you read that right). Many windows just plain dont' fit on that desktop and I find "close" buttons and the like are below the taksbar in Xfce or KDE.

I remember way back in the early days, using xvwm and setting up a larger virtual desktop that you could just roll around with your mouse. I gotta figure this is still possible, but I cant' find any info on the web about it. How can I do this in Xorg/xfce/KDE?

TIA

Goog

You should combine "Virtual" and "Viewport" in Screen Section of your xorg.conf. Read the man page for more info.

When you say combine,do you mean just putting n 2 different entries, or is there a way to put these together?

I have tried setting them to:

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "1024x768"
Virtual 2048 2048
Viewport 0 0
EndSubSection

with not effect

In a normal pc it should work. Perhaps the Asus eeepc video hardware does not support virtual screens.
