GNU bash 2.04.0: Del key odd behaviour.

GNU bash 2.04.0

Hi: I'm running Slackware 7.1 and find a very frustrating feature of bash. When typing a command at the prompt, I can't use the Del key. Pressing it only outputs a '~' before the cursor. This in a text console. If instead I run a terminal in the GUI, the behavior is worse: the Home, End and Insert key are rendered useless, and Del behaves like Backspace. Perhaps some modification in the /etc/input file could remedy this, but escape sequences are rather Chinese for me. Any hint?

I created an /etc/inputrc writing
Code:
"\e[3~": delete-char
in it, which is what is written in /etc/inputrc in Slackware 12.0, then booted but to no effect. Maybe there is a ctrl key combination to delete characters?

EDIT: I put the ascii sequence in ~/.inputrc and the problem was solved.
