Gnome task/application bars have gone missing

My Gnome taskbar has gone. After I log in, I can see my icons on the desktop, but the taskbar is not showing.

Edit: Never mind ... For some reason, I needed to reselect Gnome as my session manager at the login prompt. After that it worked. But why did it break in the first place? Hmmm ... Maybe too much tinkering?

Intersting, my Gnome taskbar and menubar have just gone missing as well. Both bars flash in and out and several small windows flash during startup and then disappear.

This happened after running the update manager. Reselecting the Gnome sesssion manager has no effect. This is in FC core 6 running under VMware.

I haven't found anything odd in any of the conf files.

Any ideas on where to look for the problem?

Thanks
