Gnome-panel freezing straight after user login via VNC

Heya,

I'm running a gnome desktop setup over VNC on debian lenny 64bit. I originally started with fluxbox, but the user didn't like, so switched to gnome. i can't remember what process i used to switch, but basically just installing gnome-core, then dpkg gdm to select gdm as default, not xdm.

The process:
- login as user in SSH
- start vncserver
- VNC to serverort
- gnome-panel (ui, taskbar, etc) is frozen
- killall gnome-panel
- gnomepanel restarts, can click the menu etc for anywhere between .5 and 5 seconds, then it freezes again
- i can open stuff from the terminal window on VNC, ie iceweasel, utorrent, transmision, nautalis etc.

Initially I got it working by completely removing vnc and gnome and xorg right back to the bones. but the server had a problem and was rebooted by the provider, now its broken again.

I've tried literally everything, except for investigating logs, which i don't know where are.

on another note, it complains about gnome-settings-daemon not starting properly in the VNC window. maybe that has to do with it, maybe not.

Thanks everyone!

Post Log's..

Hi Thelenshar,

Not sure where to start.. looking at the logs would be good. Check your logs in these 2 places:

$HOME/.vnc/$hostnameortnumber.log

/var/log/messages.log

Post the results here and we'll have a look.
