evolution e-mail crashes when receiving e-mail containing certain html features
I have tried to resolve this problem working through the evolution team at Gnome (including sending them stacktraces). However, I must be the only one that has the problem: certain html-containing e-mail (mission-critical to my scientific consulting business) cause evolution to crash. OS is Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit and evolution versions are 3.10.4 and 3.13.7. PCs where problem occurs include a DELL Vostro 3500 laptop (nVidia graphics) and two home-built PCs based on Intel i7-4770K processors and MSI CSM-B85M-P32 motherboards with 8 GB RAM (Intel haswell graphics)
The most difficult e-mail to deal with are VCALENDAR messages from MS Exchange Servers. These cause evolution to crash immediately on opening the e-mail. The only way to deal with these is to delete or move other e-mail in the inbox so that there is a regular e-mail before and after the VCALENDAR e-mail and then foward all three to a web-base mail client (e.g., Yahoo) or save the group of three e-mails as an mbox message and read the saved message with gedit. When you view the VCALENDAR e-mail on Yahoo, you can see the graphics including the radio buttons to accept, deny, or modify the invitation.
Other e-mails that give problems are those with numerous pictures and graphics such as those sent out by a well-known chain of office-supply stores. These will generally cause evolution to freeze-up the first time they are opened and then will generally open correctly on the second attempt. Apparently, the culprit here is the home/.cache/evolution/http folder. It will hold a maximum of 64 subfolders and how these get filled may be part of the problem. These subfolders contain a mixture of images from several different e-mails.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a fix (other than going to other e-mail clients)?
Think about the value of the time you've spent on this problem. Solving obscure problems (and this one sounds as if the source-code will need to be altered) will take up more time than a business user can justify. If I were in your shoes, I'd have tried Thunderbird by now.
Thank you very much for your reply. I tried out Thunderbird before making the switch from Outlook Express. At the time I tried it, it would not do what I needed in terms of mail folders and subfolders (or there was a loose nut at the keyboard). Also, at that time, I was not seeing the problem with the e-mail from Exchanger servers.
