What package are you trying to install and why are you opening it with gedit? gedit is a text editor.

that would be the nvidia.run driver ????

first IS IT the correct one for your 3d card ???
second you install it by running the program
copy it to /
then give it a executable flag
Code:
su -
cd /
chomd +x *.run
---- then run the installer ----
*.run

--- if that dose not work then this ----
sh *.run
and fallow the on screen instructions

installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed,
you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path'
command line option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.
