well im new to fedora and when i try to start desktop_effects it dosen*t start

Please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I recently installed Fedora 8 and it was working perfectly until I decided to reinstall firefox, and ever since my desktop won't load. Everything boots up normally and the login screen looks ok, but after I login I have no desktop, just a few windows. My terminal is open and the firefox window that prompts me to either start a new session or restore session is open.

Make sure GNOME is selected at the login screen and reinstall GNOME if need be.
