creating a dual monitor using two machines

I'm wondering if it is possible to create a virtual display which spans two monitors on different machines.

Let's say that I have laptop 'foo' and desktop 'bar'.

I can use synergy to share the mouse and keyboard between the two machines. I can also open an X connection so that "foo" will display a desktop for "bar".

Would it be possible to integrate these two such that you could move windows from one monitor to the other, as you could if the LCD display on "foo" was simply a dual monitor for "bar"?

I've been googling around, not finding much, but I'm not even sure what keywords to use to search for something like this: "windows", "monitor", "screen", "display" and "share" are all terms that have multiple meanings.

Has anyone ever heard of such a beast?

Hi -

The term you'd probably want to search for is "dual-headed".

This usually means "two monitors on the same host/same video card", and you can usually span both monitors with one desktop fairly easily.

The trick will be to see if you can make it work with two hosts/two video cards (but only one host's "desktop").

I doubt it - but let us know what you find!

Good luck .. PSM

No luck, but thanks for the pointer

I tried searching for "Dual Headed". The closest that I came was this, which describes a set up much like synergy, between two X sessions (sharing keyboard and mouse, but the sessions are otherwise separate).
