Question compiling KDE from source

Hello,

Does anybody know if KDE 3.5 can be compiled with qt4? I initially tried to compile KDE 4.1 but kdepim gives me an error saying there are no instructions for make after cmake is run. I get this error when trying to compile KDE 3.5:

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3 and < 4.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

I tried passing --with-qt-libraries and --with-qt-includes to configure with no luck in KDE 3.5

Has anyone had any luck compiling KDE 4.1.1?

Thanks,

No. In fact, a big part of the kde4 development process has been invested porting everything to qt4. You can't even compile it against qt3support without some patching.

Obviously lots of people, otherwise it wouldn't exist. I use Gentoo and the kde-testing overlay simplifies the whole process a lot, but as long as you have all the relevant stuff there, it should build.

However, note that kdepim has been introduced in 4.1 (it was not there in 4.0), so expect bugs at all levels. I have only installed kmail and it compiled fine, but it segfaults every now and then.

If there are bugs at all levels I would say that if there are no make instructions for kdepim after cmake is run, I would consider that a major flaw not a bug. I downloaded kdepim from 3 different sources and got the same result each time. Are there any newsgroups or anything specific to KDE that anyone knows about?

You could ask on the kde mailing lists. I am not much interested in kde 4.x right now and can't give you good advice.

There are many, look here:
