CLI RPI: How to fdisk and defrag your flashdisk


Hey does anoybody knows a site or command to fdisk your flashcard on your raspberry? Secondly i want to defrag it.

Anybody help? Greets, Wouter

Fdisk, or cfdisk, should be included - Linux doesn't need defragging, it uses a much more sophisticated file system than MSWindows.

Welcome to linuxQuestions.

Which distribution are you running on the Pi? What do you mean by fdisk the flashcard and what are you trying to accomplish? With Pi OS normally at first boot it should resize to fill the sdcard to its max capacity and you should not change / (root) on a running system.

Just a heads up: Never defragment any kind of flash memory, whether it be a SDCard, SSD, Compact Flash, etc. Regular spinning hard drives are fine, but flash memory only has so many write cycles before the memory cells fail. Defragmenting will greatly speed that up & causes premature failure. + As others have said, defragmenting on Linux normally isn't necessary due to how the filesystems work.
