cannot boot linux in GUI mode

I am using fedora 7 in vmware. The vm was frozen and I had to reboot the vm image (reset menu on the vmware menu).

Now, I am trying to start it again, but it does not work. The boot process seems to be normal, but the last step does not work that when it is supposed to show a login in the GUI mode. It was running in a loop of text login and gui login indefinitely.

Does anyone experience this problem? I am not sure if the text mode work either. Is there a way to start in the text mode?

1. reinstall vmware.
2. get a new fedora 7 VM.

What you are saying is that some closed proprietary software you are relying on has broken sometime and now it doesn't do what you want. The same fault that caused vmware to hang will be related to the login problems with the guest OS. So there is something still wrong with vmware or something wrong with the VM.

You can get fedora 7 to boot to a text login by editing grub.conf

To force Fedora to boot into text mode (no Xwindows) edit /etc/inittab and change the line "id:5:initdefault:" to "id:3:initdefault:"
