can't log into kde

I know somebody who is running Ubuntu 9.10 with Xfce, Gnome, and KDE installed. His display manager is gdm. He is unable to log into a KDE session; it tries for about 20 seconds and takes him back to the login screen. He tried creating an new user and got a little further; the desktop got past the splash screen, started to display, and took him back to the login screen. Does anybody have any ideas?

Okay, thanks... I just looked in that check utility you said to install, and I'm not sure that I see what it's supposed to do for us, exactly.

Oh, don't I feel sheepish. I'm an aptitude guy; haven't used apt-get in years.

Didn't work. I've tried every trick I know and no joy. There's something seriously wrong with his installation... stupid Ubuntu, of course. Does anybody have any other thoughts?

Already done it. I had him purge and reinstall kde using the kubuntu-desktop metapackage... no good.

I'm not gonna mark this as solved cause it isn't... he got tired of fighting with it and just re-installed everything. It works now. too bad; I'd have liked to find out what the problem was.
