Use a lightweight window manager like xfce or fvwm2: I personally use the latter, although have thought about going to a different one for some
time now as fvwm2 isn't really being worked on anymore AFAIK and is showing its age. Of course, this works for me because I still run a lot of
stuff from the command line and, in fact, only bring up X when I need the graphics.
Now if you're talking about running your app without a window manager, I believe it can be done (window managers are not part of X, unlike
microsoft windows) but you won't be able to run multiple programs since you don't have a way of switching windows. (The window manager is, in
essence, a sort of graphical shell: without it, the program running is essentially the shell.) However, if the idea is to make a kiosk or
something that has very limited functionality or is dedicated to just one function (the controlling program for a CNC machine comes to mind),
then this is definitely the solution that will save a LOT of resources, mainly memory.
