Apt removes gnome after new Debian 5.0.3 install?

Hello! I've used a Debian 5.0.3 disk to install debian twice now, and got this same unexpected behavior: apt uninstalls gnome on the first run-through of 'update'.

In the install, I specifically checked off that this was to be a desktop machine, along with server and I think another option. After the install ran and rebooted, it goes to a gnome desktop. I go to a terminal, and do "sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude safe-upgrade", and it starts ripping out gnome, a bunch of python gtk related packages, and zip and unzip (Hey! I was planning on using those!), and a few other packages.

Of course gnome shuts down when aptitude shuts it down, and apt goes about removing gdm. On reboot, no gnome. What gives?

You could try running the following:
Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude reinstall gnome
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Or you could also try sudo aptitude keep-all before running the safe-upgrade. That should restore the package database and clear any flags for upgrades or whatnot.
