my centos review:
if ever there was a more useless operating system, this would place in the top 5. where do i post my screenshot of konqueror web browser not responding? 2. where do i post my screenshot of gpart not working 3. installing centos messed up my windows 7 operating system that will not boot now and gparted doesn't work to recover the mistake 4. centos installed to a command prompt, i had to install the gui, and even now i have to log in at the command prompt, and start the gui by startx 5.there are no media players. can and will not play music or movies 6. there is no office; no staroffice, no libreoffice, no nothing. applications that you expect to see aren't there, then before you know it, you're in the middle of cutting an pasting some abstruse command lines into a terminal with unknown probabilities for success as you hope to gain some functionality over this install and salvage this clandestine project, like a reprobate child that is doomed to failure. so i would never put down something like this without recommending a substitute. my recommendation is knoppix live. no dual boot mess. no loss of data. no overwriting boot sectors or losing partitions. what i do not like about knoppix is that it will not load to hdd and you cannot customize it to your desktop, and running from cd/dvd is a gawd awful experience (slow), and even with that, knoppix beats centos hands down

Then I'm so glad you did not install it for me then;

You clearly didn't pay any attention to what you where doing in it's installation program, given that you need to explicitly select a GUI, LibreOffice, etc. It's the most stable and reliable system I've ever used. Even have the latest Linux kernel version running. And no, I don't need to type "startx" to start the GUI, given I actually payed attention when I installed it in the first place.

Enjoy you're Knoppix, and I'll enjoy CentOS...

It can also be used for desktops and IS also used for desktops. Would you like me to post a screenshot for you ?

And please stop dictating to people which distribution to use, it's THEIR choice, NOT yours. Learn to post properly, instead spamming the forum.

CentOS == RHEL...which is, arguably, the definition of Linux. CentOS is not only for servers...
That said, there may be “friendlier” or “easier” distros (but I’m using cinnamon DE on a CentOS desktop)...

Too much hate. Probably you were absent minded while you were installing the system, and did not care for consulting the install guides. This does not make CentOS a bad distro, just makes you a lousy user. Also, there's absolutely nobody stopping you to install another browser, your choice of office software, media codecs and whatever else you want.

Granted, I won't probably rate CentOS as the best desktop distro in the world, but I have been using it since 2013 (version 6.5 if memory serves me right), and I am very happy with it.

If you have another distro which works for you, that's all fine and dandy and I wish you luck for the 'day it breaks'.

i still haven't cared to go back to centos, but this doesn't make me a 'lousy user'. the reason why i am a lousy user is because i thought knoppix was a great distro. but knoppix sukcs ssa. nothing in it works, except for maybe games and gparted. i removed knoppix from my database, and feel really good about it.

so, what to do about the hate ? ok, then, how about some kudos to windows 7 for being better than windows 10. for mint for being able to boot and install despite having to use the 'esc' key to booting to compatibility mode, and having to watching an install video on youtube because the menu options are rather esoteric. i'm using mint now, and like it. to debian 9, which booted my system without having to use compatibility mode, and also installed flawlessly. and to manjaro and mx linux, also based on experience. and a hopeful to ubuntu, which i am looking forward to installing and using.

At the university (Delft, The Netherlands) we've got about 1500 CentOS desktops for student (including master students) usage.
The main DISadvantage is that RHEL 7 (where CentOS 7 is based ON) is getting old (first release june 2014), so especially the desktop tools are not always what you'd expect compared to other distributions (they age much more quickly then server tools).

Like I said already, whatever sails your boat, mate !! Personally I could never align myself with debian family, but that does not mean that I would berate debian if my installation attempt fails. [Weirdly, it did, on a kvm about a week ago] I only posted what I posted because your installation attempt was not proper and perhaps you should have looked for answers before venting out.

Cheers and peace out !

So, if problems you encountered were due to hardware compatibility issues may be different version/release of CentOS could have been a better option and perhaps with a different desktop environment?

It does when you don't pay proper attention when you are installing it. You can't blame anyone other than yourself for that. Perhaps you should post your experience on the CentOS website under the heading "everything NOT to do" or perhaps "you SHOULD pay proper attention when installing ANY system/distro" ...

I have no experience with CentOS. Just commenting that I am always looking to learn more. And I am downloading now based on glowing reviews in this thread. I have been using Debian and have zero problems with it. I do like the CentOS lifecycle more though. I am trying to move my computer to a tool rather than a constant tinker toy. I want something that will get me 100% zero issues, and not have to upgrade every couple years. I take care of my laptop quite well I think so I am anticipating many more years of life to it

Update:
So I switched back to CentOS as my home desktop for a few months. Unfortunately, I did not like the feel and the performance. My PC performs better using Debian 9 than when using CentOS 7.
