I haven't read the entire thread, but your best bet is probably to upgrade to KDE 4.4.x; It performs significantly better than 4.3.x. Keep in mind, however, that KDE 4.x assumes that you're using relatively modern hardware. If your stuff is old and/or slow you're probably better off with Xfce.

Your CPU has more than enough horsepower. Check your VGA. There are zillions of reports on which VGA KDE runs smoothly or not at all. Also settings for (expecially) NVIDIA cards which provide a huge improvement. Recently I installed KDE 4.3 reasonably succesful on a Atom 330 + Intel 945 VGA. It is workable, not fast.
I was also running KDE on a NVIDIA FX5200, now I run XFCE on that machine.
KDE is Vistalized, and only with the correct VGA, the correct drivers and the correct driver options you have a chance.
