antiX as a desktop machine

Okay, so I have used Fluxbox before, but never used iceWM. I just installed antiX 7.2 for use in a desktop application.
1999 IBM Thinkpad
Pentium II 400Mhz
128mb ram

My issues so far (maybe someone can tell me the limits of this particular OS):

-Trying to copy Open Office tarball into /opt, there's no GUI to do this point and click so using terminal.
#su root cp /media/pindrive/OOoblahblahblah /opt
#cannot execute /bin command cp
the same is happens when I use the mv command.

-Is there no GUI interface for browsing files on drives?
-Once I figure out how to install OOo will it automatically update the program lists on the start menu?

I tried to install puppy linux first, but the live cd would not run, gave me some mounting errors and something and something or other (I''ll post elsewhere for this later)

You doing that all on the same line? If so, try running just "su" (hit enter, then enter your root password, hit enter again), then run the command cp OOoblahblah /opt.

Hi

Install openoffice via apt-get or synaptic.

apt-get install openoffice.org

You can now use a script called smxi to upgrade/install lots of apps on antiX.

See antiX forum for details/help.

I'm aware of that. The thinkpad dosent have internet, so i tried installing from the package file I downloaded from the OOo website on to a pin drive. I just need to get an ethernet card so i can update the programming libraries needed to install OOo 2.something or other. Any suggestions on the easiest card to set up (not wireless, just ethernet). And thanks anticapitalista for the reply, its not often that you hear from a developer on simple matters like this. Also, is there a script or a boot option that will boot antix directly into IceWM? Its for my mother, so any simplifications would be a plus.

I use a simple, cheap Netgear PCI FA311 ethernet card.

To boot into icewm, you need to edit the .xinitrc file in you ome directory.
Change the last line from

*)
exec startfluxbox

To

*)
exec icewm-session

And IceWM will start automagically.

Have fun!
