Linux Newbie needs advice on which Cert to pursue

Hi,

I'm a complete newbie to Linux but not a complete newbie to scripting as I've scripted with the windows command shell before and understand many of the concepts.

I need to get a Linux certification so I was thinking of doing the LPIC-1 and then moving on to the RHTC. My questions are:

For the LPIC-1 what is the best book and what distro(and version)would be best to work with. The same question if I pursue the LPIC-2 as well.

If I pursue the RHTC what's the best book and best software (server or workstation)

Thank you,

Danfall17

Why do you *need* a cert?? Anyone who values a certification over knowledge and experience is probably not someone you should want to work for...

btw, it's RHCT, not RHTC. Or RHCP. :-)

I figured it out on my own

First of all if you are really RHCE and had any appreciation for what I'M trying to do you would have just answered the question instead of giving me your almost worthless two cents. I'm glad I don't work with you!!

The answer is Centos 5.5 When you vist their site and look for documentation on it you even get RedHat Enterprise 5.5 documentation because it's based on it. So says I and so says Mike Jang

I am not sure about a book, I got some documentation of a former colleague.

For LPIC-1 there is not 1 distro you can only take the exam with. I use Ubuntu to prepare myself (Xubuntu 10.10 to be precise). So far, this is working out for me.

Please relax about that reply, he is not aggrevating you on purpose. Please note that communication normally exists of more than just words. On a forum (and everywhere on your computer), you can only see the words. It's easy to be misguided, thinking someone is trying to upset you. Next time, take a breath, count to 10 and reply to the facts in the message. Thank you very much.

Ok, so apart from you acting a bit of a dick there, you didn't seem to get what I meant, as that's not the answer to the question I asked. I meant, for example, have you received specific job feedback that it would have helped you get a job? If your motivation is to learn how to admin CentOS then I would not advise certification as a route to achieve that.

I use CentOS and RHEL all day, and the fact that I have an RHCE doesn't help in my day to day work in any way at all. It doesn't really teach you anything, more go some way to proving what you know. You will get much much more out of doing a day to day admin job and some self study on areas that interest you than you will from paying redhat a lot of money for a certificate.

So many people these days seem to value the act of collecting certs more than the knowledge they believe it shows they have.
