Question Judging readiness for LPI 101 exam?

I have been a Linux admin for about three and 1/2 years, and have been studying like crazy for the LPI 101 exam. I take the practice tests from the cd accompanying the ExamCram2 LPIC book and the praxis site, and am now regularly testing in the 80%-90% range.

My question is simply this: How does the actual test compare to these practice exams? Those who have taken the test, which practice exams most closely reflect the actual difficulty of the test from your experience?

I've wondered the same thing. I don't use Linux at work at all but have been into Linux for about the same amount of time. I have the LPIC 1 book by Ross Brunson and a study guide from LearnIT. They seem good.

I'm planning on taking my exam at the end of this month before they change the exam so you have to know RPM & DPKG. I never plan on using Debian.

How about you? Any ideas on when you are taking the exam? I just set the date and try to make the goal. A person can always cancel a day in advance if needed.

Hi!
Im already certificated in LPI level 1(this week i passed 102), and can tell you that the exam is harder that the sample question but with you level of 80-90% in practice test I think is ok, that was my level when I took the 101 exam.
If you want to know more about my experience in the exams let me know!!

I am scheduled to take the exam at LinuxWorld next week. I think we would all like to know more of your experience with the exam if you don't mind. There is little info out there on the subject and this forum gets a lot of views but few posts. Do you mind me asking how you scored? Oh and welcome to LQ by the way.

On the subject of RPM vs dpkg, My sig below says it all. I administered Red Hat and later SuSE servers for a couple years, but once I found Debian, and cured the problems that come with RPM, I never looked back. I think I could do ok on rpm questions but would rather take the Debian version as that is what I use.

Well of course you can ask hehe. I was scored 630 in the first(101) exam and 550 in the second(102 exam), from my experience the second one was really more difficult.
To study for the 101 exam the best material that i found in the net was crammaster ones, the test questions were most similar to the exams ones and the guide that come with the test is great!!For 102 I used mainly "O'Reilly- LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell" and "Linux Pro Institute Lpic 1 Certification Bible", that can be also used for 101 but the main problem with almost all the material that I found was that was old, from before the main change in lpi so the subjects of the exams are switched and there is some new features(like ntp).
The first exam has two parts that was more difficult for me than others, hardware and X window system.
The second one has some parts like manage system time and networking general that was pretty difficult, this second part(networking general) is very well documented in "Linux Pro Institute Lpic 1 Certification Bible".
Also the exam was pretty confusing for one thing:its suppose to be only 66 questions in 101 and 72 in 102 but i did about 100 questions in both exams, suppose was for testing new features (like CUPS).
Above all look carefully for filling gaps question, is a paint in the ass when they told you "What file make this?" and you put the file "foo.conf" but you`d had put "/etc/foo.conf", some questions are ambiguous in this aspect.
Testking test are OK too.
I did RPM version of 101.
If you want to know more feel free to ask please and sorry for my horrible English plzz!!
