CompTIA LX0-101

So I've taken the test twice and failed :-( Just seems like a really tough test to pass, at least for me. I used CompTIA Linux+ Complete Study Guide book (Sybex - Roderick W. Smith) and along with the testing software that came with it. I found it totally useless in preparing me for the actual test. Anyone have a better resource that will help me pass LX0-101 & 102?

Thanks

I feel like a failure, seriously

Is this something that you need for work, if so get them to enroll you onto a proper course with plenty of practical hands on. If you are after a bit of paper to waive at an employer, I wouldn't bother, they will set you practical tests to assess your skills if they have any sense.

Learning Linux takes time, but is worth the effort. If you want to learn about Linux ask questions politely & they will be answered. Try to be specific, giving as much detail as possible.

If you are just starting, take a look here :-

Fatmac,
I have been using Linux off and on at home for awhile. I would like to get Certified for personal reasons, non work related. Its more of a personal goal for me...I can do alot of basic things with linux and have setup a couple of servers at home. I am currently using Linux Mint as a desktop and have used OpenSuse, Fedora, Ubuntu, and some others...Taking the test was a major let down since I really did feel confident I would at least pass. I am really deflated now, but my goal is still there. So if anyone can help me find other study materials so I can pass CompTIA's LX0-101 & 102 that would be great.

I am studying for this test and I have read that it takes more than one book to adequately prepare for this test.

Which book are you using? I used the Sybex study guide which covers part one and two. It's not a great read but if you go over the concepts enough and practice them on a distro (either debian or rpm based) you should have a better understanding of why things are the way they are and how they work.

Personally I found that after several years experience in the field using Linux it was easier to take the exam as I had a good feel for what I was dealing with (if that makes any sense) to individuals planning on taking up this cert.

The work experience paid off because what I was reading in the study guides I had already used in a production environment...

Hope this helps!

Hi froopie1, I passed it around 6/7 months back. I studied one weekend and gave the exam. Now I was using linux for quite a long time and this exam was solely on basics you need to know ins and outs. The best way is to practice, practice and practice. Just don't read the books, try them on in different ways. No matter how many books you read if you don't do hands-on, that certification will be just a paper. I agree with linuxlearner17.

Even in those 2 days, I have learn some new things and I loved it which I didn't know or didn't focus on earlier. I only used Sybex study guide. For me, I just read the book as I knew what will happen when I will type those commands mentioned in the book. The worst thing on this exam is you don't have man help which RHCSA/RHCE have so practice along with reading.

Best of luck next time as now you know what to expect. You will pass, no worries.

OP - Be advised the second test in that series is considerably more difficult than the first. Also, I found them both to be much more elementary than the RHCSA exam.
