creating a normal user breaks modem use

when i create a regular user, access to the modem is broken (using kppp, it gives the error message 2, "using noauth" not allowed unless root (something like that).

has anyone else seen this and fixed it?

running as root seems 'wrong. so damn wrong.'

Try adding the regular user to the dialup group.

did that, but it seems to be something deeper. i think i might have to try and apt-get pppconfig
from debian because that always worked with Mepis/Debian when kppp didn't work.

but i was hoping i wouldn't have to fart around with Lindows/Linspire because i just don't have alot of time anymore.

I've recently installed Lindows/Linspire 4.5 Devel edition and everything seems to install pretty good except for it didn't connect to my cable broadband connection for some reason. It picked up my 3com nic but didn't have any IP numbers listed when I type, ifconfig -a command.

This is the first distro that didn't automagically connect to the internet.

Any ideas/suggestions?

You should be able to configure your settings in the 'Network Settings' section. If not, check to see what kind of eth card you are using, modem settings..etc. and try to CNR what you need to kick it in. It may of detected it, but it is not utilizing it.
