system shutdown instead of reboot

Hi.

I'm having a problem with the reboot procedure. When I initiate a system reboot, the computer indeed does restart, but when it should ask for a HDD password (more correctly skip it, as HDD passwords are only asked on a fresh boot), it shuts down instead. It only happens when I reboot from Gentoo, other live linux distros seem to work properly.

Since this problem seems to be gentoo specific, I assume there is something in the kernel settings that should be different. Kernel version doesn't make a difference, the problem is persistent on all tested kernel versions.

It is a Lenovo Thinkpad, not too old; gentoo stable; no special kernel settings (I think).

Did anyone encounter such behavior? Is there a way to fix it? Thanks.

I would rather think there is a missing driver on Gentoo which caused that behaviour (looks like it cannot handle the encrypted device). Probably you can solve it by adding a kernel module, but I'm not really sure about that.

Thanks for the reply.

I figured as much that something is missing, but I'm not sure what. Although it seems rather interesting that a computer reboot is dependent on the OS used to reboot from. In old BIOS days I never heard anything like it. Reboot should be reboot regardless of the OS used, since the OS is (theoretically) not involved up until a boot manager is called for, which happens definitely after the HDD passwords.

The main problem is, that I don't even know where to begin the search for the solution, as the problem occurs when the OS is not running. This means no logs whatsoever to look for clues...
