So many bad replies: "Write it yourself", "noone wants it", etc. Have you ever thought how important these features are? In my company, we do some web conference with leader of other enterprises sometimes to get serious work done.

In my spare time, I learn Korean with some Korean friends. Since I live in Sweden and they live in South Korea, Webcam/Mic is a most for me to improve my pronunciation with native Korean speakers.

I also have familiars living in another country and it can take many months, if not years, till we meet again. Webcam and Mic really brings us closer.

My guess why Gaim does not have those features is because:

1 - It can't focus on one single protocol. Every program out there which tries to be a one-stop crap fails miserably. Think Nero: It was a great app at the beginning. Today it has features like cover design and other useless stuff. I won't be surprised if they actually add a make-coffee feature;

2 - Gaim has to release a new update every 2 weeks to keep their tradition as the "most active project at sourceforge", even though the new releases don't add anything interesting.

I just wanted to make clear that just because you don't need those features does not make them useless. And this kind of mentality is what brings Linux usability in many fields (games == not real work, image edition == not real working) down a lot.

No.

I do applaud for you're creative way for learning korean, on the other hand.

You do have some points with conferencing and whatnots. But Strictly speaking you don't need to see a person to get things done.

Personally I would'nt use it if I could avoid it. It does remove a certain anonymity element from the internet.

Now that I read back what I wrote, I did sound a little bitchy. Sorry if I gave that impression, it was not my point. I also don't mean that you were either write or wrong about the webcam or mic features. I just want to make clear that it is very important for a number of peoples and I am one of them. Usually, I blame all Linux problems to hardware vendors. However, in this case, it is more a software issue above all else. For example, my webcam works fine in Linux, but a messenger supporting it with efficiency is yet to be seen.

Microphone is ratter buggy too. At least with a few applications. Another application I use a lot is Skype. I have to make International calls sometimes to friends in other countries without Internet connection (or not fast enough). Skype is available for Linux, but every time I try to call for a normal phone, be it in Sweden or not, the calling is interrupted after 5 seconds. Not sure where the problem is, but I guess it lies somewhere in the sound card drivers...

Anyway, I just wanted to point that out. I'm not saying that I'm more write or wrong than anyone here. I'm just a person who does, use those features a lot ^_^;;

Regards!

P.S: thanks for your reply slantoflight!

skype is made for windows, it sucks for us who uses linux. And they are working on viop and camera for gaim. This woll be a killer application. The thing is that it should be ported to windows to get more users. I do not know if this is the case.
