Non-Technical: The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
This book has a lot of themes and ideas relevant to my life and it also helped spark my interest in languages and etymology.

Technical: Moving to Linux: Kiss the Blue Screen of Death Goodbye! by Marcel Gagné
This book gave me the confidence to try out Linux and allayed my fears that it was too hard.

Cheers

For those of you with a scientific bent

The Making of the Atomic Bomb

by Richard Rhodes (this book won a pulitzer)

If nothing else, it is a great read about WWII, the power of science, the power of sheer will, and it is very, very pertinent as to what's going on today with proliferation. Honestly, a very very good read.

I saw Jared Diamond's "Guns Germs and Steel" mentioned - that is wonderful.

His first book: "The Third Chimpanzee" also quite good.
