RAID

Sorry to switch subject:

Software RAID info for anyone who cares can be found at:

http://linas.org/linux/raid.html

Later Daze

This is actually part of it though it means that I will also have:

a tekram 290 40mb scsi controller with four st423451w (23GB 5400 rpm) hard drives. (big old drives, if you have never seen one, they weigh about seven pounds each)

Talking

Well..I got a bunch of shit goin on right now...I guess my home machines are what counts...cuz the work ones aren 't mine.....Although the IBM s390 mainframe running SuSe Linux 7.1 completely r0xorZ.

System #1 : My desktop

AMD Thunderbird 800@ 1400mhz (don't ask...involves a fishtank, some copper tubing, and my house's water pipes.) on an Asus A7V...coolest MoBo ever...cuz it has dual ATA100 and dual ATA66 with a 45 GB IBM DTLA100 drive, and a 30 GB IBM DTLA HDD.... I have a creative 12/10/32 cdrw, and a pioneer 10x DVD...I am runnig a soundblaster Live!Value, and a geforce 2mx (great card for $55) I have a 19" viewsonic monitor. The badboy has 640 (512+128 mb of pc133 running at pc150) This system is a whore, and I currnetly have it running quad-boot ...win98/suse 7.2/win2k advanced server/NT4.

seconly, I have my cs server(which I put together for like 200 bucks) running a duron 700, 256mb ram....adn a 1.5 gb HDD, it runs redhat 7.1.

System 3# the samba machine

386 25 mhz....running slackware....with 8 mb ram, and a 25 gb hdd..it server my mp3s/DivX rips...my whole family uses it to store mp3's and such.....and I stole it out of someones trash..so it roxorz

The sparc..... I got a sun sparcstation 4..not sure what I'm gonna do with it...prolly solaris......wanna get another so I can try clustering em..cuz that would be friggen neat.

Finally...
I have a p166 running Debian..one of the finest OS'es on earth. It does all the routing and firewalling I need...keeps people off my computers...and lets everything at the cable modem.

All these are connected by a 3com office connect 100baseT full duplex switch...and ethernet cabling that I managed to get into the walls...don't tell my dad..he hasn't figured it out yet.

Anyways...Slack, SuSe, and Debian roxor....and solaris is kinda neat..although I dont completely get it...rock on ....and thanks guys..cuz most of these machines were set up with lots of help from this forum....Thanks a bunch RAZ....you'r definately my dog....we can chill on the front porch and drink forties some day...haha...

Okay...way too long winded here....

1.2Mhz Athlon, 512 of Crucial RAM, Abit KT7A-Raid MoBo, Some expensive as hell video card a friend who knows video cards said I should buy, Sony DVD. All of this managed by either RH 7.1 or SuSE 7.1, it seems I do a reinstall every week just to experiment with different stuff. More stuff on the way as this is my project box. The other 2 computers in the house are Window$ machines, they are running whatever Gateway sold me, who knows? Who cares?

I must opine as well ...

This particular box is an Athlon 900 @ 900, using an ASUS A7V. About not overclocking, when we first put the fan on the processor, we put it on backwards, and started the burn in, so bad things, it wasn't connecting right. Not ONLY that, when we realized the mistake and tried to get the fan off, it took the majority of the plastic tab with it, so now that the fan's on the right way, it's not comin off. It still runs at about 51C (that's pretty aweful, I know, I'm afraid to screw with it). ANYWAYS
256MB of PC133 ram, CAS2, mind you. Basic SB PCI128 card, it really sucks and it's causing me problems, so I'm probably going to switch it out with my AWE64. 20gb Maxtor @7200, partitioned with 5gb for Red Hat 7.1 and 15gb for Win2k. I originally started out on Win2k, and I had to move it to the back of the drive with partition magic so I could install linux before the 8gb mark. Heh . I'm running RH 7.1 here, but righ t now I'm booted up in Win2k, I'm messing with sound card crud to fix my linux problems.
Sitting beside me is the currently idle RH 6.0 machine, it's a P166 with 64 MB of EDO ram (crusty old, I think 3 1/2 years, my first personal machine). It's running RH 6.0, and was originally my linux machine that I played with. When I built this machine, I made that old one my play box, and that was my first fun time with linux. I stopped using it and turned it off eventually to keep the heat down in my room.

In the other room is my dads really screwed up Gateway PIII450. I finally convinced him to let me fix it for him. We're building him a machine, should be buying him parts within a week, and he went ahead and got the hard drives. His puter's not important anyways.

Sitting in the corner of our study is the quiet NAT server. This poor thing is a P120 with 32 MB of ram, running Win98 SE purely because it had ICS. I've been wanting to replace it with a trusty IPCHAINS linux box for a while, and do some IP masq, but since my dad wouldn't know what to do if it had a problem ... He doesn't want to have to learn linux anyways, he's got too much to do.

In my closet, I've got the hulks of two worn out PCs, actually, come to think about it, I gave one of those away, it was pretty broken. I've also got a working Apple 840AV sitting in there that's just waiting to get mkLinux put on it. Floating around somewhere I've got an old Mac lap top, and an old Toshiba T2000 that I'm going to TRY to get some kind of small linux distrib on it. Wish me luck, that's going to be a lot of custom coding there.

The gateway, the server, a hub in my room are all stuck on a hub, and the linuxbox, my puter, and another cable for friends computers are attached to my hub. Sadly, we still run at 10 MB/s. I've got a 100 MB/s, but since my dad never got us a 10/100 hub, well ...

Whew, that got long really quick. There's my whole computer setup. I think that verifies me as a computermonger there.

-Infamous-Tim-

P.S. Anyone from Dallas, TX go to First Saturday? I'm curious to see if anyone knows about it/goes to it. I always manage to pick something up down there, in fact the server is a puter I bought for $15, switched out the power supply (it was 220V for europe), and it booted! Heh.

I have a Compaq presario 7594 with a 533MHz Intel Celeron processor. 128 megs of ram, a 7.5 GB hard drive, running windows 98. I will, however, be adding a Maxtor 30 GB, 7200 rpm hard drive and will be dual booting with Red Hat 6.1. Still don't know how to dual boot using the different hard drives. Still as confused as ever.
