Basically, it is a website where anyone can change anything. This means that everyone can contribute to making the informatin better and updated.

see http://gentoo-wiki.com/Main_Page

See http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=wiki

Basically, it's a website where any (suitably registered) person can post information, thoughts and other such things related to the topic of the Wiki. Kind of like an online discussion group / information centre.

So I can change a wiki so it's all false information? If so, not really a good idea

It's a self-regulating concept. Everybody who thinks you're wrong comes along and changes it back. Plus, there are sysops devoted to watching what goes on and keeping things coherent. So, sure, it *can* degenerate into a chaotic mess or it *can* be an invaluable resource. Just like any community. Basically a wiki simply reflects a freely expressed consensus-reality within the wide parameters set by admins and sysops. If *most* people with the *most* energy are vandals, it won't work. If *most* people are positive and active or just not stupid enough to think vandalism is a useful expense of time, it will.
