Will a USB connector even fit in the ethernet port?
The answer must be yes, because I did it. My ethernet port is on the side right next to the usb-3 port.

Plastic bags are pretty cheap. A clean, liquid and static free, air free container might be the best. Somewhere in between there's a reasonable solution. I just keep mine in a drawer.

You won't find any metal box, plastic fishing box or paper bags or plastic bags at these supply houses because they won't work.
Thanks for the links, jefro. That's good to know.

That's because a lot of smaller-capacity SD cards these days don't actually use the whole area of the card. So as long as the nail goes through the part that's just plastic and misses the actual memory chip, it's fine.

If you have an SD card that does use the full card for its chip, then you're screwed.

Can confirm. I had a laptop that the Ethernet port was right next to the USB port on the back. There were many times when I put it in the wrong port and didn't realize it until I was pushing against the pins of the Ethernet port...

Ours live in one of the measuring cups that come with laundry detergent in the cabinet over the washing machine. That's where I dump them when I fish them from pockets before (and sometimes after) they go through the wash.

They do seem to survive the wash pretty well, don't they? I have one which has been through the washer at least twice and the tumble-drier once and still works fine.

They do survive pretty well. I usually find them before the dryer.

I've run them through the dryer as well as the washer. My flight suit had lots of pockets, and things were always getting forgotten in one of the pockets. Flash drives always survived well, but some small flashlights didn't always make it. I have one flash drive that has lived in my pocket for >7 years. It's in a Swiss Army knife that was a present from my daughter bought on her honeymoon. It's been on my keychain, in my pocket, full-time, and works fine. I haven't washed it, but it has lived a hard life with no obvious ill effects.

Side note, use many different ways to backup the same important data.

If you want to keep them safe, how about a safe, or a safety deposit box? Ho ho ho!
