If you actually read the patent, it seems to be patenting a "preview" of the virtual desktops, not the concept of virtual desktops themselves. That seems to be the reason that they are including the Gnome and KDE screen shots; they are claiming that the current method of previewing other desktops is lacking.

Looks like a desktop pager to me...

I hope mdg doesn't mind the additional bandwidth, but if you look at this screenshot of Enlightenment, the pager seems to be everything this thing MS is attempting to patent is, and maybe more considering it spans 2 screens.

It's stuff like this that really makes me hate capitalism.
