The people who don't like tattoos are the people who don't have any.
I have good Maori ones on my shoulder and was think of getting some more.
Big dragons are good.

I'm wondering because a number of years ago restrictions were removed totally and there's been an explosion of people getting them in the US. There are tattoo-con events where they host weekends at event halls over tattoos and piercing.

Honestly I see people with entire sleeve tattoos, and they look ... bad to me. Yes, I've seen beautiful tattoos, like the wings shown in an earlier post. And I did see a sleeve tattoo that I thought looked good. So I'm not saying all tattoos are bad looking. But one does wonder the motivation for them.

I also see very young people just get them as soon as they can. And they get video game images, or just stuff they think is cool. And that's fine. However they're getting a permanent thing on a youthful whim, just because they can. Mixed feelings about that.

And last year there was some kid across the pond, I forget the country; he got a McDonald's cash receipt tattooed onto his arm for one of those "How far will you go?" type of things. And not even a contest I think, just like Facebook/Instagram notoriety. Yeah, I kinda question that kids' judgment. I mean, he's never going to tell a story like "Well, I married that cashier, that was our first meeting where I got that receipt ..." Nope.
In the Army 670-1 has changed and will continuously change but, when I came in you couldn't have one if it showed outside of your dress greens and when you came in they all had to be marked and evaluated. Then the rule went away during Iraq when we needed as many soldiers as we could get. The older tattoo rule is now back in effect and folks with visible tattoos will either have to get them removed or not be allowed to re up.

I like tattoos just fine but I never got one.

I have three tattoos but I had to stop getting them once Justin Beiber had his sleeve done -- it's so uncool now...

My $SIGNIFICANT_OTHER has full sleeves on both arms and most of her legs done plus hand tattoos and even a fat Buddha on the back of her neck

Actually I meant not legal as in not legal uniformly state by state. Such as in MA where we still can't sell beer on Sundays, etc. (And I don't really know, just an example) but tattoos, maybe not "having" them, but "getting" them I believe was illegal and the US Supreme court made a ruling sometime back in the 80s or 90s.

Yeah, in my service days, predating Gulf War I actually, it was against the UCMJ but it was one of those "they'll enforce it suddenly you can't perform your duties because you got infected, or whatever, due to getting a tat." No sailor from the CNO down would admonish another sailor from getting the pretty, busty gal in short shorts wearing a mock navy uniform applied to his forearm. I've seen plenty of those. Same for the various services, such as what Marine would be offended at application of Semper Fi, or the various special forces and their tats.

I don't judge much. They're not for me. I would ask that those who have them not judge back. I didn't say I don't like them in general. There are ones that I haven't liked, and there are ones that I do like. I don't really prefer Rok's, but I like the one his wife has. As he says, "it's pretty", and it is. I meanwhile respect what he does have inked and see the artistry in it. To a degree it is cool. And honestly it would be an identifying mark if I were ever to happen to run into him. I'd introduce myself and shake his hand both in Linux and human camaraderie.

Piercings? A couple, all closed now.
Tattoos? My last tattoo was in inked in Prison circa 1990, and is of no significance.
I merely had space 'there' to test out some home-made ink (to go with all the Tattoo Gun motors I was selling).

Prison does funny things to people, and economics.

I think that's a little simplistic. I would say that most people who don't like tattoos don't have them and most people who have them like them but even that's just generalising.
People like me and Germany Chris like them but don;t ahve them for our own reasons.

Not having much "personal style" or any artistic bent there's nothing I can think of, presently, which I would like but if I did think of something I would have a tattoo done tomorrow.

I had a few small self-made tattoos from the time I was 13. Back then I wanted to be 'cool' and I wanted everyone to see how cool I am. They are not in very visible places. Although I do regret making them, they do not bother me that much to have them removed.

Now I don't have a pressing need to convey any message about me via my appearance (be it tattoos or hair style / clothes). I listen to a very heavy type of music but you'd never tell if you saw me. I like minimalism - plain clothes, no inscriptions / slogans / bands / statements / brands / unnecessary pockets / chains / embellishments, etc). I don't want to be defined by my looks.

Having said that I do like very artistic / beautifully designed tattoos on other people's bodies. Some of them are really intricate and cleverly done. The ones I am not a fan of are the ones that are supposed to be statements of something. But then again, someone else's body is not my business...

I do really like tattoos and I also have a small one myself on the inside of my arm. They do get more 'mainstream' though.

My opinion on this is the same as that of a crusty old command sergeant major I knew in the 82d Airborne. He had multiple combat jumps in WWII, and at the time had served ~30 years. He used to say "Just as soon as I get old enough, I'm going to grow me a mustache and get me a tattoo". I think I'll get a tattoo just as soon as I get old enough. I've been drawing Social Security for awhile, but I'm still not old enough. YMMV.

I can guess that you have crossed 30.

Well, when I crossed 30 I realized that
looks have 0 impact on relationships or work.

All that matters is how worthwhile
you consider yourself.

Call it a mid-life crisis if you will but this is the kind of thinking which makes me a lot more prone to having a tattoo.

I have inhabited this lump of fat, skin, bone and muscle for a good number of years and, in that time, I have become aware of things like a (benign) growth on my foot and that I am killing my liver (really, completely, absolutely)
As a nod to art I feel I ought to have something scribed upon this.

I said I was done. But 273 post hit a nerve.

Everyone in my family has a tattoo. Mom. Dad. Sis. Bro. Nieces. Sons. Daughters.

Mom and Dad had the most impressive ones though. They put ours to shame.

The nerve struck was when I asked my Mom why she took up smoking again
after just helping her save her life over a botched hysterectomy. She had quit smoking before that for years.

"What do I want to preserve this old body for?"

Then putting her big galoot son in his place like a female alpha pack wolf. She had me fetch her cigarettes.

Mindsets change as we become older. I think mine is reverting back to
teenage years. Not on everything. Just certain things.
