Not quite. Gold has a number of uses, but definitely not enough to justify its current value.
I would not invest in gold. During the last great depression the US gov't confiscated privately held gold:

Invest in weapons and items with inherent value. Land is good unless someone decides to take it from you and you are unable to defend it.
