s.m.a.r.t. disabled on all SATA drives, no matter what OS?

I love checking my drives with smart long test to see how fit they are. Smartmontools used to work great, but now with the new SATA drives, they all don't support smart anymore, at least on Linux. From what I could learn, support for smart is a long long way away.
Does anybody know how it looks on Windows? Are there ANY tools that can read all smart data (temperature is must for me)?
From what I just gathered, it seems that the windows smart tools that existed also suffer from the same defect and fail to read all SATA drives.
If by a long way away, you mean in the past, then it's true. Any system with kernel 2.6.15 or later and libata support works, according to the Linux SATA development team.
"-t short" to run quick self-test, then -d to specify controller type and view result. I think it incorrectly assumes SCSI because of sda device name... never had to use -d with my PATA drives.

I just tried it, wow, great!!! I have now waited a long time for it, about 2 years, that why I was so cynic about it.
Constantly trying it and seeing it fail in many ways does not inspire so much.
You have to specify the -d ata parameter, without it does not work (and enable smart, since it is disabled by standard (??????)...
