Problems resizing my fat32 partition

Ive been trying to resize my win98 fat32 partition so i can do a hdd install of knoppix.
I tried using qtparted but it seems to freeze when it tries to get the disk data.
So then i tried using nparted but it gives the error: "I Cant get de max partition's geometry" when i select the fat32 partition and go to edit.

I also tried using a dos boot disk and fips but fips gives the error: "Number of sectors in partition table must match sectors in boot sector"

Any ideas, suggestions?

I cant format and start again because my parents have important stuff on the drive.

thx in advance

Edit: I forgot to mention that i did both a scandisk and a defragment and both completed with no errors.

Edit2: Er this doesnt seem to be attracting much attention. Perhaps this too was the wrong place to post it?
If so can someone plz tell me where it should have been posted.
and if someone gets it moved would they plz let me know with a pm or something.
thx

For this sort of thing, I would use partition magic. You might consider downloading the first Mandrake Linux disk. It contains Partition Magic written code to resize drives. However, make sure to back up the data on the partition just in case it doesn't work.

Thanks jschiwal i didnt think of that.
Ive got a copy of mandrake 7.2 that has disk drake on it. I will try that.
Having only a dialup connection makes downloading the latest copy of mandrake a little hard but hopefully disk drake on the mandrake 7.2 disk will work.
