People want open gaming. Android game console pulls in 1.8 Mio. $ in 24 hours

A Kickstarter project for an open game console seems to break all records. The designers of the project, called OUYA and aimed for a price of 99$, want to create a game console that is open for anyone, so that people themselves can write games for it.
And it seems that people like the idea: The project aimed for a funding of 950,000$ in a timeframe of 30 days. They got almost twice of that in the first 24 hours.

Sadly, I am currently short on money, but when this hits the market I will definitely buy such a console.

It sounds a lot like the GP2X.

Never heard of that before, but it seems that these are handheld consoles, the OUYA will be a stationary console connected to a TV.

I was looking at this a half hour ago, and when I came back, the pledges increased by almost sixty grand.

Don't forget the Open Pandora. It's also a hand held though; one i really want infact.

In regards to the original topic, it sounds great but i'm a little sceptical about one thing. It's based on Android. I own an Xperia play mobile phone which is that phone often dubbed 'the playstation phone'. It has playstation controls and a sony store to buy ps1 games to play on it. It is great, but alas, most native Android games like grand theft auto 3 for example are designed specifically for the touch screen and mapping the controls to the playstation buttons is not usually possible. (works great with emulators though).
I am interested how the gaming controller will fit in with apps, or will games have to be specifically made for this console, and if that's the case, how will they be seperated from an ordinary Android app.
