Novell to Open SuSE Linux to Community

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1843097,00.asp
And there was much rejoicing...

Woot!

I can't wait till it's available for download! I was almost ready to buy a copy of SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro... glad I waited

As much as I love Novell and SuSE Linux, this isn't a big change and has been expected for a while.

Basically, SuSE Pro will now be mainly supported by outside developers ("the community") and Novell Linux Desktop (NLD) will still be supported internally as a corporate desktop.

I don't know that this is good for the product, but it should cut down on company expenses by getting rid of some of the development work.

Let me elaborate (now that I am not just being an idiot). I started with SUSE 9.1 Personal as my first distro and it didn't include gcc and gtk++. How sucky is that for a linux newbie!!!

Pardon? That's not true.

The "personal" install didn't have it, but you could change the install points and install it fine over ftp. The Pro version had it on disk.

You get what you pay for - or go to the trouble to download it.
