Don't know the first one but you have to consider, Hollywood always twists and changes movies from what happens specifically in the book. Maybe you should ask the director this or the script writers, they might have a good reason why they changed it.
This is because:
<conspiracy theory>
the first hollywood director to twist the plot from a book was married to a highschool english teacher. He did it so that the bookreport scammers would actually have to read the book.

Oh: in the book, Strider never falls off the cliff, Elrond never tries to convince his daughter to go with the other elves: gollum decides to kill them at the gate.
if that's not the reason: could they stop it please?
and: anyone have any idea when it(the 3 movie) is comming out in a third world South Amercian country called Bolivia?

Go scrape together about $22 USD, then go and buy what my friends and I like to call: "The Box that continues to #@#$ you up.", (The two towers special edition, blah blah blah), and sit and watch the writer's commentary with Peter Jackson and Fran and er... the other one. Then watch the first segment of the 3rd disk. This will rationalize all of the changes they made. Depending on whether you're a Tolkein purist or not you may or may not agree with them, but at least you'll understand what kind of crack they were smokin'
Also, the extra 45 minutes rocks... it adds in all sorts of things that shouldn't have been left out, unlike the 30 minutes added to Fellowship that were some nice fluff (In the "Box that will #!@@ you up.")
Personally I can't wait for the "Box that will #@#! you up for Life" due out... what, next October, and then of course you know they're going to release a 3in1 with all new blah blah blah "Orc shapped Box" probably in 2005, that of course... I'll have to buy also.
I read The Hobbit back in Air Force Ejection Seat Tech School at Chanute AFB, Illinois back in about 1976. Then I read the trilogy over the next few months after I transferred to Flugplatz Spangdahlem, Germany.
It was an amazing journey. Then recently I've seen the first 2 movies. The movies were good in their own right, but they sure can't compare to the written words of Tolkien.
I can see now that I need to go back and read the books again.
And, I've learned along the way to just enjoy the movies, and not worry about comparing the movies to the books.
You're totally right itsjustme, i feel that the books and the movies can both be enjoyed separately, without the need to compare. I mean they both rock the world, so why waste the time you could be spending enjoying them, forming comparison charts??
