linux supports amd 64, windows doesn't, right?

I am buying a new system, mainly for gaming and it will run win xp (which is the best thing that anyone can do with windows in my opinion, doesn't stand up professionally).
Now I see all these fancy AMD 64 bit cpus coming out and know that linux supports this.
But since this is going to be a windows bucket, I heard that windows xp does not at all use the 64 bits, so I am essentially throwing money out the window(s) by buying this thing, <irony> thanks to microsofts "innovation";-)</irony>
I do not want to wait for longhorn, and hope it might never arrive.
Can anybody of your confirm that win xp cannot take advantage of the new 64 bit AMD cpus?

Thanks

Markus

It is my understanding that currently Windows XP 64-bit edition only supports IA-64 (aka Itanium/Itanium2). I'm sure there will be a version down the road that does support x86-64 extensions from both Intel and AMD.

the x86-64 edition of windows is on its way, beta's are already downloadable on the microsoft site. I don't know when they release the official version, but I think it will be at the end of this year or in the beginning of next year.

The new windows op is called LONGHORN. Beta is out now, consumer version is coming out 2005 (maybe) Complete rebuild from what I know. But still has to be compatible with 32bit. I have a 64bit AMD machine with XP home, but that is why I got a 2nd H-D and put SuSe 9.1 PRO on that. I'm tierd of waiting on longhorn. It keeps getting rescheduled. BUT that's good if they don't rush to market a piece of crap.
