I like my windows games....however, since i've installed MEPIS on my crappy VIA Cyrix III box, I haven't touched them. I get so frustrated installing some of the applications (especially from debian unstable) but, i usually get things to work, and, I've learned something EVERY TIME I DO IT. Windows? It does everything for you, and frequently incorrectly. Compile an app in Windows? Please. Price: $200

Free secure ftp, http, ssh, and all the programming languages, libraries, applications, games, and WHATEVER you could ever want?
Priceless.

My migration will be complete very soon, and I can't wait. I'll keep a 10 GB partition for Win, just in case I can't get a game to work in WineX...But that's it, i've decided! I'll be a MEPIS freak...till i decide to pick something else! :-)

I love Linux.. I only started using it a few months ago (started with Fedora Core 1, went to Core 2, now I'm a Slackware 10 convert), but I'm trying to learn how to do something new in it almost every day.

However, I'm still a gamer, when I have some spare time to allow it. And the fact of the matter is, when I do have time to play a game, I want to play, instead of fighting to get it working under Linux. Now, some games work flawlessly (and Doom3 having a native client is just awesome), but I'll probably always keep a stripped down copy of WinXP in the bootloader until Linux gaming catches up. Consoles are a good option, but if a game is out for console and PC, its almost always better on the computer (I'll also never pay money for an XBox, ever). Also, I use Windows for the Macromedia applications (Dreamweaver, Flash, etc), as they seem to perform better in their native form than under WINE.

However, I don't let my Windows partition do anything. I used XPLite to rip out Internet Explorer, and most other default applications. I don't even have a web browser installed on Windows, and I physically unplug my RJ-45 from the box unless I need net connection to play multiplayer (or upload webpage docs from Macromedia to my FTP). I hate Windows, but more importantly, I don't trust Windows. I don't want it to have access to the outside world except when absolutely necessary. I long for the day when Linux has the mass support it deserves.

And yes, I realize that I probably sound psychotic and paranoid.

I like what you want. If windoze and Linux were reversed, the net would be a lot safer. It would at least make those virus writers work for it. Of course most would log into the GUI as root and surf the web and install everything that comes along, just like they do in windoze.

Still think it would be better though.

Of course it's possible!
I've recently switched to Mandrake Linux and i Love IT!!!! I only use Win because my principal development framework still being VisualStudio, but i'm in the way f learning Java to avoid it MS at all, Finally if i want gaming... welll I'll get an XBox soon so... i think i don't need anything else inside my box. I'm a database teacher, love OpenOffice to work, use Firebird for my examples and java based clients for it. We have now RealPlayer (via Helix), XMMS, Xine, TOTEM and many many multimedia stuff for fun... it's true Linux still being a little tricky for newbies but as a Computer Science Graduate i enjoy figuring out how to get thing working... but recently one of my brothers who study Phisical Therapy now started using my Linux box and in no more than 2 week he's cool with this grat OS... besides... we laugh at sasser attacks

I just made the switch...i started in windows 95 and got to XP and i finally had enough with all the ad ware and crap...system haults and trojans even with virus scanners and ad aware programs...

i dont program.
im slowly getting out of the gaming scene.
im slowely getting into the video ripping scene...
and i love pirating music, ARGggg matey
and open office works just fine (cant wait to get it to support MSoffice files)
windows can do all this...but im tired of its crap

linux is just fun to use and install stuff with...

all you gurus probably get frustrated cause you know what works and what doesnt,
but for me, a stupid n00bie, i think it was a blast just to get the winamp presets to work in xmms. and java too
honestly i like gaim and mozilla better than aim and IE and i had no problems with any drivers on my system...Linux got me interested in computers again

Have you noticed tabs in Mozilla yet? I used to hate going to my brothers and working with IE. He has Mozilla now though.

I have never bought windoze but I sure do love Linux though. Tabs is a big plus too.

Billy boy thinks people can't use Linux instead of windoze.

It may not be old to him though. My brother didn't know what tabs was till a month or so ago. Same for some friends of mine. I just think they are so neat and make surfing the net so much better, especially when searching for something.

dalek that is very true; I did not think of that. Changing the topic a bit, I think I will create a Linux home office howto; I think this is a very needed howto. The idea of a home based business becomes more practical every day. Linux made the venture affordable for me.

yeah i leaned of tabs second day...well really the first day of using it...first day was the install...second day was xmms w/ winamp presets/ third day java and flash/ fourth day was working on K3B but i hit a brick wall...so i started over on an extra HD and now I'm setting up a print server and XMMS to play files over the network...all i need to do is make the physical switch, and set up the print server and we are ready to go over at my house....

then i get to set up the real hard stuff(to me anyway) on my 120 gig and leave it up here

any idea if the following games are possible to get on here:
WC3
doom3
halo
ut2k3
jk2
hitman contracts
cs: the original, or the newer ones ( ehh...last resort game...haven't played since 1.3 i think that was the one where it made you slow down when you jump)

anyway! if i ONE game to work i'll be happy!

i seriously think just getting stuff to work is fulfilling. screw windows. easy installs and even easier to install spyware...hell you dont even know when you get it! isn't that a great characteristic of an operating system!!?

wow i just used the spell check. hehe. that was damn cool.!

wow im a nerd, and not in the cool way

I use windoze for the games I can't get running in Linux. Other then that it's Linux all the way.

I started useing linux when I was in High School, but I kept windows for games and video editing.
Once I reached college I had my desktop running SuSE and my laptop running SuSE/XP dual boot. However not having booted into XP for 3 months made me decide it was time to let it go.
I installed Fedora Core2 the other day and it is what I use on a daily basis now.
(I've also Slackware10, I just need more harddrive space).

The lack of games is a good thing, I can concentrate on studies or go out more often. Plus we've still the PS2 for Madden 2005.
Its also nice to have the only computer in my dorm suite that hasn't been kicked off of the network because of virus infection, and its fun to see the others struggle with spyware, at least they've started to listen to me (they've all got mozilla firefox now).

So Yes, you can use Linux without Windows, it is not so bad, just do it.
