the mean time between failures is probably far greater than the lenght of its useful life. even at full load. in fact keeping things working all the time can actually increase life. its like light bulbs eh. applies to a lot more than computers.....

anyway, i use(d) ubuntu on dell d600's and d610s to great effect. cpu throttling, disk suspending, hibernation etc. battery life very good.

not sure all hardware will be as well supported, but i really think that things are improving rapidly. and as i say, even if power saving features dont work the worst that is likely to happen is that your battery life will be shorter.

e.g i've had a 20g disk since about 1997 running really hard really often. no faults.. modern hardware.. :-)
