I come here and find the forum populated with reasonably intelligent people. Then I pick up a packaged victoria sponge and find the following instructions on the packet:

HOW TO PREPARE
Ready to eat. Place cake onto a flat surface and with a serrated knife, cut using a sawing action.
I almost expected it to add that you have to open your mouth before you can put any cake into it. Is LQ the last sane and normal place on earth?

lol, reminds me about one elderly lady who dried her cat in a microwave oven.
Here are a few:
On a baby stroller - Remove baby before folding.
Electric drill - This product not intended for use as a dental drill.
On a bottle of pet medication - May cause drowsiness. Use care when operating a car.
On a hairdryer - Do not use while sleeping.
On a lawnmower - Do not use for trimming bushes.
❖ "Not to be used as a personal flotation device." -- On a 6x10 inch inflatable picture frame.
❖ "Remove plastic before eating." -- On the wrapper of a Fruit Roll-Up snack.
❖ "Not dishwasher safe." -- On a remote control for a TV.
❖ "Do not put lit candles on phone." -- On the instructions for a cordless phone.
Hahahahahaha
I'm assuming your topic is rhetorical, hazel. Heh. Thanks for a good laugh.
In the US, on the back label of a peanut container it says, warning product may contain peanuts or peanut by-products.
I can sort of understand the psychology of that. Peanut allergies can be very dangerous, so manufacturers adopt a belt-and-braces approach. Incidently, when I was growing up, you never heard of anyone being allergic to peanuts or indeed dangerously allergic to anything. "Allergy" just meant hay fever or itchy bumps on your skin. Asthma existed but there would be at most one child in one's year that suffered from it.
It has to do with products sold in/to the USA, because they are so fond of suing people, that you have to cater for all the idiots!
I'm an American and I represent this statement!
Lowest common denominator. Usually it's us... And even if not us individually we are guilty by association. And yes most Americans abuse the legal system at every turn.
I read that there are many factors like genetics, peanut processing, farming methods and just that fact that developed countries have less exposure to germs which reduces the immune system. Allergies come and go. A few years ago all of a sudden it seems I have developed sensitivities to nuts, wheat, gluten and legumes.

I don't think it's only that, because for everything you see on a label, chances are SOMEONE did/tried it. I can guarantee someone folded a baby up in a stroller and wanted someone else to blame. Any of us here probably have a million "are you kidding me?" stories about what some folks have done with their systems....this is just an extension of that to other areas of their lives.

I might could understand it on a can where one can't see the contents, however it is even on a small bag of peanuts where one can see the peanuts in the bag. lol

My wife has a job that's semi-public-facing in a large corporation, so things that go out to the public have to be VERY scrutinized. And getting stuff past a legal team is a nightmare, so if they have one 'approved' set of things to say, it's easier to copy/paste than waste weeks of time going back and forth about tiny changes in text.
