I wouldn't say so. Spam filters seem to be keeping spam at bay, reasonably well.
Also, a little bit of education on how to use e-mail could be productive:
1. Use multiple e-mails (2,3) for multiple main purposes (friends, public, school)
2. Never post your adress online in text form (this_style_is@major_spam_bot_bait.com), rather make it into a picture or perhaps:
my_email_address at my_spam_free_server dot com
3. Use a special, distinct address when signing up for online services, forums, newsletters
4. Disable html when viewing messages
5. Do not reply to or read spam (they are not difficult to spot). They breed even more.
6. Don't use obvious names for addresses (john@yahoo.com)
