Import contacts from csv file to android phone

I've been looking this subject over for a while now, but google is littered with hits irrelevant to my application.

How do I import a contact list stored in a spreadsheet into an android contact list. I get the part about converting to a vcard file. What I don't know is the record format (order and position of fields).

Well yeah, it's only called "Email".

You may also want to have a look at this too.

I use something called K-9 mail on my Androids. I've used it for years.

As near as I can tell, it does not have the capability of importing *.csv files.
