Google Chrome users please read - http removal from url bar

I'm not usually one to make a fuss about software, especially free software, but I've just heard about this and thought it would be a worthwhile discussion point.

So, basically google are removing the 'http' from the address bar url. It was first noticed and reported as a bug a short while ago, but then was confirmed as being a feature and the the bug closed so no further comments could be made.

Of all the things that need working on and improving in chrome this, in my view, is not one of them, while there are still problems with html5 video, and also the lack of certain more or less standard browser features. I like chrome. It is one of the fastest browsers that I've come across so far, but feel like things are taking a wrong direction.

So... I made a post on the chrome forum. Not sure if any notice will be made of it but thought maybe someone will.

If anyone has any views about this please add to the post to keep it going, and of course discuss here. I'm sure some of you can express things much more elegantly and persuasively that I can so the more help the better here I think.

Hmmm... I've not noticed anyone else with your issues. Are you certain that it's not just your installation or settings?

FWIW, http:// is a given... It's the prefix for every URL. I don't see the problem with making it invisible.

Just my

I have Chromium, and the prefix is still there. Not sure what your problem is.

I'm posting from Chromium right now, and I see the "http://" in my address bar.

Now why did you duplicate my post?

Now do you see the pattern? I already posted that I was in Chromium and that I wasn't missing the prefix. Then you butted in and said the same thing.

I didn't even think I was "duplicating" your post, I just said that I see "http://".

I also said something unrelated, too, near the end of that post.

1) There are protocols other than http.

2) Why increase the complexity of a program for such an unnecessary "feature"?

That's not so. On a regular day I will browse several ftp sites and https sites.

I agree that the protocol prefix needs to stay in the URL bar. Just off the top of my head this will hinder the way that I check for updated source code for slackbuilds as well as creating local mirrors of various repositories. Copy/paste saves many a mistake. If anything I think they need to ADD support for prefixes (smb and fish for instance).

This is a proposed feature for the future. It hasn't been implemented yet.

AFAIK, it's not a cosmetic change just to make it invisible. They eventually want to replace http with a new protocol (spdy) claiming that http is old and inefficient.
