Right. What about the printer IP address?

Is 192.168.1.17 the address of the printer?

Or how is it connected to the network?

I've gotten mixed up. 192.168.1.17 is my computer's IP address--I can see that from looking at the connection. The printer's IP address is...0.0.0.0. I made the printer print a status page: the IP, subnet mask, and IP gateway all display zeros. I don't know how to give the printer a non-zero IP. But...if I told the system the printer was 192.168.1.17, I guess that would mean the computer's just talking to itself? No wonder it's been slow and won't let me click on the printer icon on the taskbar--I suppose I locked it up.

Yes, the printer will need to be given a static IP address somehow.

Do a master reset then hardwire the printer to the routerto setup wireless via its Web page as desired.

Ah. So then I can't do this from my laptop but must take the printer to the router and connect them? The Brother instructions say connect the printer to the router or access point, and I thought the access point was my computer.

The printer defaults to dhcp which is why you need to connect it to a router.

Another method would be to connect the device via USB and the setup program configures wireless. I prefer using its web page.
