Try copying the file to your workstation and editing it there, then copy back to the network location? We have tons of issues with microsoft office files on a windows network. Ironic, yes...
The program is part of Microsoft's Office suite and does run under Windows OR a Windows emulator, BUT, the spreadsheets it produces can be read and updated by several open source programs both under Windows AND Linux.
I've just just remembered that office takes a copy of the file while it is working on it and keeps it in the office temp folder.
If the application crashed and left that copy around, the original may well be inaccessible until it is repaired or removed.
