cluster and common external storage device- bottleneck?

I am thinking of experimenting with 2 old PCs , in order to build a cluster system. I have also an external firewire box with more than one HD. The PCs of course have firewire support.
I will connect the PC to the box, but will both PCs be able to access it at the same time?
If one PC at a time can access the box, then i won't have the results of clustering.
What if i also create a RAID system? Will the problem be fixed?
Thanks
